AI visibility tracking is now in every major SEO platform. That does not make it useful in every platform.
As a content marketer, I spent time testing the LLM tracking features inside the tools I already pay for — then compared them against the dedicated LLM visibility tools that have appeared in the last 18 months. The conclusion most comparison posts do not reach: for the majority of content teams, you do not need a separate LLM SEO tool. The features inside SE Ranking or SEMrush cover the problem, at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated platform.
More than 900 million people use ChatGPT every week. AI Overviews appear in roughly half of all Google searches. Traditional rank tracking tells you nothing about either. That is the real problem LLM tracking tools solve — not ranking position, but citation presence in AI-generated responses. The question is which tool solves it at your scale.
What LLM tracking tools actually measure
Traditional rank tracking answers one question: where does this URL rank for this keyword? An LLM SEO tool answers a different one: does this brand appear in the AI-generated response when someone asks a question related to this topic?
The mechanics are different. An LLM tracking tool sends a set of test prompts to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and other platforms, records the responses, and checks whether your brand appears — as a direct citation with a link, as an unlinked mention, or not at all. Run this across hundreds of prompts and you build a share-of-voice metric: the percentage of relevant AI responses that mention your brand versus competitors.
Three metrics are worth tracking:
- Citation rate — how often your domain appears as a linked source in AI responses - Mention rate — how often your brand is named without a link - Share of AI voice — your citations as a percentage of all citations across the prompt set
The gap between citation rate and mention rate is the most actionable signal. A brand named frequently but rarely cited has content that LLMs are drawing on but not surfacing as a source — almost always a structure and depth problem, not a technical one.

SE Ranking AI Visibility
SE Ranking launched its LLM tracking as a standalone product called SE Visible before folding it into the core platform as an add-on. For teams already running SE Ranking for keyword research, site audit, and rank tracking, it is the most cost-efficient path to LLM coverage without adding a second subscription.
What it tracks
The AI Search add-on monitors ChatGPT, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, and Gemini — six platforms from one interface. The core output is citation and mention tracking across a prompt set you define. Results show which of your pages appear as sources, which competitor pages appear alongside yours, and how share of voice shifts week over week.
The content performance view is the most practically useful output. It shows which of your published pages are most frequently cited across the prompt set — which is a different signal from organic ranking position. For a content team deciding where to direct editorial effort next quarter, that is a more direct answer than rank position alone.
Pricing
The AI Search add-on costs $89/month on top of an existing SE Ranking subscription. SE Ranking's Essential plan starts at $44/month, so the combined floor is $133/month. As a standalone product, SE Visible starts at $189/month for 450 prompts. If you are already on SE Ranking, the add-on is the right path. If you are not, the SE Ranking Essential plan plus the AI add-on gives you a full SEO and LLM tracking stack at a price point SEMrush does not match. For the full breakdown of what SE Ranking covers on its own, read the best SEO tools for small business comparison.
Where it falls short
Weekly refresh cadence. For a $133/month combined cost, daily tracking is not included. If a competitor earns a major citation shift overnight — because a new piece of content landed links or a product update changed how LLMs categorise the space — you will not see it until the next weekly cycle. Teams that need to catch those shifts in real time are better served by Otterly.
SE Ranking's AI Search add-on tracks your brand citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini — for $89/month on top of your existing plan. The 14-day free trial covers the full platform.

Semrush One AI Visibility Toolkit
SEMrush built its LLM tracking into Semrush One, the platform's AI visibility layer. The AI Visibility Toolkit tracks brand citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews, and surfaces share-of-voice data against competitors.
The scale is the main differentiator at this tier: Semrush monitors 261 million relevant LLM prompts globally. That is a broader prompt dataset than any dedicated LLM tracking tool operates at. For brands in competitive categories where the AI response set is large and varied, the data breadth matters more than the daily cadence.
What it tracks
The toolkit covers linked citations and unlinked brand mentions. It surfaces which competitor pages appear in AI responses for your target topics and lets you benchmark share of voice across a prompt cluster. The free AI Brand Visibility Checker is worth running before committing to a paid plan — enter your domain and it returns your citation rate across a sample prompt set. That is the first diagnostic. If your citation rate is zero across the sample, the problem is content depth and structure, not tooling.
Pricing
The AI Visibility Toolkit costs $99/month as an add-on. The Guru plan at $249.95/month is the minimum for teams that need the full content toolkit alongside LLM tracking, bringing the combined cost to $348.95/month. For a detailed breakdown of everything the base SEMrush platform covers before the AI add-on, read the SEMrush Review 2026.
Where it falls short
Coverage at the $99/month add-on tier focuses on ChatGPT, AI Mode, and AI Overviews. Perplexity tracking is available but confirm your plan includes it before assuming full coverage — Perplexity is a primary research tool in B2B buying journeys and missing it leaves a gap in the data. The weekly refresh cadence applies here too.
Otterly
Otterly is the right choice if you want a standalone LLM tracking tool and do not need an SEO platform alongside it. It covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Copilot, with daily tracking on every plan. The entry plan starts at $29/month.
What it tracks
The Share of AI Voice metric is the headline number: the percentage of relevant AI responses across your prompt set that mention your brand. The GEO audit function goes one level deeper — it shows which specific URLs are influencing AI responses for your tracked prompts, and which changed between audit periods. That change data is what makes Otterly useful for content teams rather than just brand monitoring teams. If a competitor's page started appearing in responses that previously cited yours, you can identify the exact URL and examine what changed.
Pricing
Lite — $29/month: 1,000 audits per month, daily tracking, 4 platforms. Standard — $99/month: 5,000 audits, 10 brands. Premium — $249/month: 10,000 audits. Free trial available, no credit card required.
Where it falls short
No traditional SEO integration. Otterly does not do keyword research, site audit, or rank tracking. If you are adding it alongside SE Ranking or SEMrush, you are paying for a feature those platforms are now building in — at an additional monthly cost. The honest question before buying Otterly is whether the daily cadence and GEO audit depth justify a second subscription over the add-on inside your existing tool.

Profound
Profound raised $96 million at a $1 billion valuation in February 2026. It is the category-leading enterprise platform for LLM visibility. It is also not the right tool for most content teams reading this.
The Lite plan starts at $499/month for ChatGPT tracking only, with 50 prompts. Full platform coverage — Claude, Gemini, Grok, and a comprehensive prompt set — requires the Enterprise tier at $2,000 to $5,000 per month. The feature set is genuinely differentiated at that price. The Conversation Explorer surfaces the actual questions consumers are asking LLMs in your category, which is a research input that goes beyond tracking into strategy. For a consumer brand tracking AI mentions across multiple product lines and markets, that is real value.
For a B2B SaaS content team tracking 20 to 40 prompts across two or three AI platforms: $5,000/month is paying for a problem SE Ranking solves for $133/month.
The connection between content SEO and LLM citations
AI in SEO tools is table stakes now, not a differentiator. Every major SEO platform has LLM visibility features. The differentiator is what the feature actually does — and more importantly, what the data tells you to fix.
The point most LLM tracking comparisons miss: the content that gets cited by AI is the same content that ranks on Google. LLMs pull from pages that cover a topic thoroughly, answer questions directly, and carry authority signals — strong internal link structure, external citations from credible sources, clear heading hierarchy. The work that earns organic rankings is the same work that earns LLM citations.
There is no separate optimisation layer to add on top. A page ranking in the top three for a target keyword is far more likely to appear in AI responses than a page ranking on page two. The tracking tool tells you where you stand. The content and SEO workflow — better briefs, deeper coverage, more targeted internal links — is what changes your position. For a walkthrough of how SEMrush, Surfer, and Frase fit into that workflow from research to published draft, the 2026 SEO content tools comparison covers each stage.
When not to buy a dedicated LLM SEO tool
If you are on SE Ranking or SEMrush and your primary need is knowing whether your content appears in AI responses: the platform add-on covers it. Do not pay for a second subscription.
If you publish fewer than 20 pieces of content and have not run a keyword gap analysis in the last 90 days: LLM tracking is not the bottleneck. The content that earns AI citations does not exist yet. Build the content programme first.
If you are a solo operator or small business with under 50 published pages: Semrush's free AI Brand Visibility Checker gives you a useful snapshot at no cost. Run it on your domain before committing to any paid plan.
If you need the content itself rather than more dashboards tracking it, our content writing and link building service covers the work that earns both organic rankings and LLM citations — from brief to published draft.
Track citations or earn them — we do the second part
LLM tracking tools show you where you stand. The content that changes your position is a different problem. Our content writing service covers keyword research, briefs, and on-page SEO built to earn both organic rankings and AI citations.
